Microchipping

A microchip is a permanent means of identifying your pet so should they become lost the chance of being reunited is much improved.

Microchipping is a procedure which involves injecting a small microchip under the skin of the scruff of the neck. There is no need for sedation or anaesthesia so it can be done in a consultation.

Each chip carries a unique number which can be read by a portable scanner. The number is registered on a central database so if a pet is found then they can be scanned and the owner located.

Maintaining Health

We aim to work closely with you to ensure your pet stays as healthy as possible for as long as possible. Regular preventative healthcare along with a good diet is key to this.

Our Pet Health Club aims to make this as affordable as possible. Membership includes annual vaccinations, worm and flea treatment and an excellent diet at cost price.

Membership also includes, amongst other things, reduced cost consultations which make it affordable for you to come in and see us if you have any concerns about the health of your pet.

Please see our Pet Health Club page for more details

Parasite Control

Fleas breed throughout the year in heated homes and it is therefore advisable to maintain a regular flea control programme which will kill the adult fleas and which should prevent a build up of fleas in the environment.

Worms are mainly found within the intestines of your cat or dog. Eggs are produced which can be ingested by other animals and humans.

Certain roundworms can have serious health effects on humans including blindness. We recommend regular worm control to reduce any risk associated with worms in your cat or dog.

Investigation and Treatment

If you have a concern about the health of your pet we will book you a 15 minute appointment. This will allow us to listen to your concerns, examine your pet and discuss with you what the problems are, what investigations might be required to get a diagnosis and what the possible costs are.

We have a full range of facilities including radiography, ultrasonography, endoscopy, blood testing, surgical facilities, separate dog, cat and isolation wards.

We offer anyone who would like to register as a client the opportunity to come and look at the facilities.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are given to both dogs and cats to provide protection against life threatening diseases that may be contracted from the environment or unprotected animals. We recommend that dogs are vaccinated against Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus and Leptospirosis. Cats benefit from vaccination against Herpes, Calici, Feline Enteritis and Leukaemia.

We recommend an initial vaccination course as a puppy or kitten followed by an annual health examination and vaccination to ensure the protection we give them is as good as possible.

Out of hours emergency care

We are a small practice. This has many advantages, the main one being that we can get to know you well and that you can get to know and trust us. The downside of being a small practice is that we are not able to provide good quality 24hour a day care every day of the year.

Our aim is that you are provided with the best care all the time which is why we have teamed up with the Medivet Group.

They will continue to provide you with the care you rightly expect outside of our opening hours. The team at the Medivet Group will deal with both any emergencies as well as with patients that require intensive care overnight.

The option of either a transfer to Medivet Group or retaining your pet as an inpatient at Carterton Veterinary Surgery will be discussed with you fully in the event that your pet requires inpatient care.

Please go to the Contact Us page for contact information for the out of hours service.

Together in sickness...

We look after our pets when they are well and when they are unwell. The time may come that we are unable to help you maintain the quality of life of your pet. When that time comes we are here to help you with making the final decision.

When the time comes

We are frequently asked 'when is the right time?' or 'how will we know...?' These are very hard questions to answer.

Quality of life is the most important aspect to consider, not necessarily the actual disease or the treatment. Some pets cope well with what we might consider to be very significant disease and will have a good quality of life for longer than expected, others may not cope as well.

Quality of life is hard to define. The main considerations should be behaviour and appetite. If both of those are normal then it is reasonable to assume that quality of life is ok. If either are not normal for your pet, please come and see us so that we can discuss the options.

Please remember that being brave enough to make the decision to euthanase your unwell pet is a sign of your love for them.

What happens?

We would like to take this opportunity to advise you of the practicalities. Hard as they may be to consider it is often helpful to know what will happen and what the options are.

Consider whether you would prefer your pet to be euthanased at the practice or at home. We will be there with you for either. The other consideration should be your choice of how to deal with your pet after the euthanasia. You can opt to deal with this yourself or we can help with organising a cremation. You can choose to receive the ashes back if you wish.

We will talk you through everything that may happen and will remain with you and your pet until their 'passing away' is confirmed. You will then be asked if you would like some time alone with your pet.

Please remember we are there to help you cope with the decision and the process as much as we can.
